If you use Word, Excel, Outlook, or PowerPoint on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you’ll want to check your settings before July 13, 2026.
Microsoft is releasing a major security update. If your Apple device is running older software that can’t support it, your Office apps will drop into “view-only” mode. You’ll still be able to read your files, but you won’t be able to edit or save anything.
Your files are completely safe, but to avoid an annoying disruption to your workday, here’s the quick way to check if you’re safe:
1. Check your software version
iPhone/iPad – Go to Settings > General > About and check “Software Version”.
Mac: Click the Apple icon (top-left) > About This Mac to see your version.
2. Are you in the safe zone?
To keep editing documents past July 13th, you need to be running…
iPhones & iPads – iOS 17 / iPadOS 17 or higher (iPhone XR/XS or newer, you’re fine).
Macs – macOS 13 (Ventura), macOS 14 (Sonoma), or macOS 15 (Sequoia).
3. What to do if you’re behind
If you’re on an older version, try running a system Software Update, then update your Office apps via the App Store. If your device is too old to upgrade, it won’t support the new security certificate.
